This paper investigates the application of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to develop optimal stock trading strategies in complex and dynamic financial markets. The authors address the challenge of strategy optimization by training a DRL agent using daily price data from 30 selected stocks, which serves as the trading environment. The methodology involves leveraging DRL techniques to enable the agent to learn adaptive trading decisions aimed at maximizing investment returns.

The study evaluates the performance of the DRL-based strategy by comparing it with two benchmarks: the Dow Jones Industrial Average and a traditional min-variance portfolio allocation strategy. Results indicate that the proposed approach outperforms both baselines in terms of Sharpe ratio and cumulative returns, demonstrating its potential for enhancing profitability and risk-adjusted performance in stock trading. This work contributes to quantitative finance by showcasing DRL's capability to handle market uncertainties and optimize trading decisions effectively.

Highlights

  • 1Proposes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework for optimizing stock trading strategies to maximize investment returns
  • 2Demonstrates the adaptability of DRL agents in complex and dynamic stock market environments
  • 3Outperforms traditional benchmarks like the Dow Jones Industrial Average and min-variance portfolio strategy in performance metrics

Methods

  • M
Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) agent training using daily stock price data as the market environment
  • M
Selection and utilization of 30 stocks for training and trading to simulate realistic market conditions
  • M
Performance evaluation through comparison with Dow Jones Industrial Average and min-variance portfolio allocation strategy

Results

  • R
The DRL approach achieves higher Sharpe ratios compared to both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and min-variance portfolio strategy
  • R
Cumulative returns are significantly improved using the adaptive trading strategy derived from DRL
  • R
The agent successfully learns an optimal trading strategy that adapts to market dynamics, validating DRL's effectiveness in financial applications
