ContestTrade: A Multi-Agent Trading System Based on Internal Contest Mechanism
ContestTrade: A Multi-Agent Trading System Based on Internal Contest Mechanism
ContestTrade is a multi-agent trading system that addresses the high sensitivity of LLM-based agents to market noise by introducing an internal contest mechanism. The system comprises two teams: the Data Team, which processes raw market data into concise textual factors, and the Research Team, which uses a Deep Research methodology with specialized financial tools to generate trading signals. The core innovation is a real-time evaluation and ranking mechanism within each team, where agents are scored based on market feedback and only top-performing outputs are selected. This adaptive framework enhances robustness against noise and improves trading performance.
Experiments on A-share market data from January to June 2025 show that ContestTrade significantly outperforms traditional methods (MACD, RSI&KDJ), machine learning (LGBM, LSTM), deep reinforcement learning (A2C, PPO), and other multi-agent systems (MASS) across cumulative return, Sharpe ratio, and maximum drawdown. The internal contest mechanisms are validated by high Rank IC and ICIR values, indicating effective prediction of factor and signal quality. Ablation studies confirm that each component—LLM Judge, contest mechanisms, and Deep Research—is crucial for the system's success.
The paper's contributions include a dynamic multi-agent architecture with internal contests, adaptation of Deep Research to finance, and robust information denoising. Future work aims to scale simulations, apply to broader markets, and integrate diverse data sources.
Highlights
- 1Proposes ContestTrade, a novel multi-agent trading system with an internal contest mechanism inspired by corporate management structures.
- 2Adapts Deep Research methodology to financial trading, enabling agents to autonomously plan and use specialized financial tools.
- 3Introduces a real-time evaluation and ranking mechanism within Data and Research teams, driven by authentic market feedback.
- 4Achieves superior trading performance (CR 52.80%, SR 3.12, MDD 12.41%) compared to baselines including MASS, PPO, and LSTM.
- 5Validates contest effectiveness with high Rank IC (0.054 for Data, 0.079 for Researcher) and ICIR values.
Methods
- MMulti-agent architecture with two specialized teams: Data Team (processes raw data into textual factors) and Research Team (generates trading signals via Plan+ReAct framework).
- MInternal contest mechanism with three-phase 'Quantify-Predict-Allocate' model, using Zero-Intelligence Trader for factor quantification and LightGBM for prediction.
- MDeep Research methodology: Research agents use a suite of financial tools (web search, news, market data, etc.) for in-depth analysis.
- MAblation studies to evaluate contributions of LLM Judge, contest mechanisms, and Deep Research.
Results
- RContestTrade outperforms all baselines: Cumulative Return 52.80%, Sharpe Ratio 3.12, Maximum Drawdown 12.41%.
- RData Analyst Contest achieves Rank IC of 0.054 and ICIR of 0.13; Researcher Contest achieves Rank IC of 0.079 and ICIR of 0.18.
- RAblation shows removing all core components reduces CR to 3.01% and SR to 0.07, with MDD increasing to 26.63%.
- RRemoving Researcher Contest drops CR to 32.83% and SR to 1.78; removing Data Analyst Contest drops CR to 42.85% and SR to 2.01.
- RRemoving Deep Research increases MDD to 20.55% and reduces CR to 43.75%.
